Northvolt's Implementation Near Boucherville Chrysler: A New Era for the Automotive Industry
Posted on September 28, 2023
The automotive industry is undergoing significant changes. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, accompanied by the Premier of Quebec, François Legault, hailed today's announcement that Northvolt Batteries North America will build a new electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Saint-Basile-le-Grand and McMasterville, Quebec. With power coming from clean energy sources, the batteries produced will be among the greenest in the world. This initiative, near Boucherville Chrysler, signifies a major shift for the region and for Quebec as a whole.
An Unprecedented Investment for Quebec
Northvolt's announcement represents a historic turning point for the province of Quebec. With an initial investment of 5.3 billion dollars, later increased to 7 billion dollars, it's the largest private investment ever made in Quebec. The plant, to be located in St-Basile le Grand and McMasterville, will include a cathode production unit, a battery cell assembly line, and a recycling facility. Thanks to Quebec's clean and economical hydroelectric power, Northvolt aims to produce the "greenest battery in the world."
Northvolt: A Meteoric Rise
Since its inception in 2017, Northvolt has established itself as a major player in the battery sector. In March 2021, the company bolstered its research and development capabilities by acquiring Cuberg Inc., based in the San Francisco Bay Area. With several factories in Europe, the establishment in Quebec marks a significant expansion of Northvolt in North America.
Impact on the Region and Boucherville Chrysler
Northvolt's arrival in St-Basile le Grand is promising news for the region. As the automotive industry increasingly shifts towards electrification, having a global battery manufacturing leader nearby opens invaluable opportunities. Boucherville Chrysler is excited to embrace this new era and offer its customers increasingly efficient and eco-friendly vehicles.
Quebec: A Leader in Transport Electrification
Quebec attracts significant investments at every stage of the electric vehicle supply chain. These investments boost the economy and create quality jobs. Northvolt's new plant will have an annual production capacity of 60 GWh, equivalent to the consumption of one million electric vehicles. When operating at full capacity, it could inject up to 1.6 billion dollars into the GDP annually and create up to 3,000 jobs in the region.
Northvolt's investment strengthens Quebec's position as a global leader in the green economy. With major players like Northvolt setting up in the province, the future of the automotive industry in Quebec is promising, sustainable, and green.
